Pool volume
Length, width, average depth, and shape determine approximate water volume. Spa volume and shared systems should be considered separately.

Pool volume is only one factor. Proper sizing also considers temperature rise, recovery time, exposure, cover use, gas capacity, water flow, and the expected swimming season.

Technical guidance

Heating from 65°F to 82°F requires more energy than maintaining a pool already near the target temperature.
Wind, shade, nighttime temperatures, surface area, and uncovered water increase heat loss. A fitted cover changes the heating load significantly.
The gas meter, gas line, electrical service, plumbing size, pump flow, filter condition, and equipment pad layout must support the selected heater.
Larger heaters reduce warm-up time when the installation supports them. Oversizing without checking gas and water conditions creates problems rather than performance.
